Question:

How do I stop my driveway gate from dragging on the driveway?

This is an exisiting chain link gate and fence. The gate is 39" high and 56" wide. When I open the gate it drags on the driveway. It never did until about a year ago. It's an old gate but very sturdy, not deteriorated at all. The driveway is old too, so I doubt it's related to settling. I replaced all the hardware, but that didn't help. I tried raising the top hinge thinking it would pull the top closer thus raise the outer bottom, but it still drags. I raised the entire gate an inch off the ground, but it drops right back down when I swing it open. Is it just that I don't have the hinges tightened enough? They seem to be, I can't turn them anymore. Should I maybe be lowing the bottom hinge? Or is there something else I should be doing? I'm so confused. :)

  1. If you raise both hinges leaving little play for the gate to move up and down it should not drop down as you open it.  Another option would be to put a wheel on the outer bottom that drags.  That way it would just ride on the wheel on the driveway.  Otherwise you will have to try reanchoring the post it is attached to as it has probably moved a bit.  One thing I have done is twist the top hinge to about 45 degrees from the bottom hinge.  This will raise the outer edge. but the gate won't be square on the post anymore.
