How do I stop my kitten tearing the plastic and paper in her kitty litter?

I have a 3 month old kitten who will not leave the paper and plastic liner alone in her kitty litter and makes a constant mess. Does anyone have any idea how to stop her doing this?

  1. I know countless cat owners who have tried litterbox liners, but I can't remember a single one who is still using them - for the very reason you describe.

They are more trouble than they are worth.

I have never tried the PAM spray, but it sounds like a good idea to make cleaning easier.

If you are having trouble with constant mess from the litterbox, consider a covered/hooded litterbox. This should also help with any litter getting kicked out of the box.

You can get a mat to put under the litterbox that is designed to stop any litter stuck on kitty's feet from tracking around the house, if that is an issue for you.

Trying to change the way she uses the litterbox, to prevent her tearing the liners isn't advisable. I don't think you'll stop her ripping them, but you may inadvertently deter her from using the litterbox, as an answer above mine mentioned.

    Hope that helps...

  2. Don't use liners.

What I do is when I clean the box out (you should do this monthly with scoopable), I wash it with some bleach, rinse off with water, allow to dry.

Then I spray the whole box down with cooking oil (PAM, but a cheaper verison lol)

It is WONDERFUL. Nothing sticks to the box, the cats dont' rip up those stupid liners, and the litter stays in the box :)

  3. no plasctic = no mess

  4. I don't think you can do anything, if you try to stop her from doing it you may scare her from using the box altogether.  They do make disposable boxes, they run about $6 for a 2 pack, if you can afford it.  I wouldn't spend that much but if you really don't like cleaning

  5. You shouldn't have plastic or paper in the litter box. Try what silent_k told you. I've been a cat owner for years and never thought of spraying the box with cooking spray. I'm going to give that a try when I change the box tomorrow.

  6. They sell this litter box at Walmart; its has two nesting pans and a sifting screen. The sifting screen kinda protects the liner. Plus, you don't really need to scoop. You just pick up the sifting screen, pour the clumps in a garbage bag, put the screen in the second box (the liner already in) and pour the rest of the litter in after. Cost me $13 at Walmart.

  7. don't use liners, they love to tear it
