Question:

How do I stop my new cat from peeing by the doors.

I recently obtained a 4 year old cat after its previous owner passed away. The problem is that she uses her litter tray for number twos but does her number ones by the front and back doors. I've tried moving her litter tray but it doesn't help. I guess she is telling me she wants to go outside but I've only had her 2 weeks and she isn't settled enough to risk that just now. What can I do so that she uses the tray for everything?

  1. i answered a similar question yesterday...

    this is very common...

well there can be a number of reason,

    she can be ill

she can be "acting out" in an unfimiliar enviornment... even marking her territory in hopes that other cats will not enter her new home...

    my only suggestion is:

clean the areas thoroughly with lemon juice or full strength vingar to neutralize the odor...

maybe try placing the litter box in front of the door when you are home to see if she will make use of it...

speak to her vet.... she/he may have some suggestions or find some under lying problems

    good luck

  3. Inappropriate urination is often a sign of illness, it's possible she has a urinary infection so you should take her to the vet for a check up.

If she has not been spayed, then she should be.

  4. Make sure you're keeping the tray clean enough for her liking.  Some cats dislike using the same tray for pooing and peeing, so perhaps you should provide a second tray to see if that helps.

However, as she's only peeing next to doors, I suspect that she may be marking territory.  This may be because she's feeling a little insecure in her new home, or there may be cats outside that she feels a little intimidated by.

The Celia Haddon Cat Problem page has a check list of 18 reasons why cats stop using a litter tray with advice on how to solve the problem.  If it turns out that she is marking territory, then you'll also find an article on the best way to deal with that.
