I have just set up a new wired internet connection with Tiscali on my pc but don't want the router to be giving out a wireless signal (sorry if this sounds basic, I am far from a computer expert!), how can I just have the wired connection to my pc without the router 'beaming' a signal out?

Cheers.

  1. Go into the internal configuration website of the router and go to the wireless settings and turn it off. Some wireless routers let you choose operating mode: 802.11b, 802.11g, off . This should take care of the problem.

  2. Just disconnect the router from the modem then plug your computer in with an ethernet cable running direct from the modem to your computer. The whole reason of having a router is to use wireless internet and it has no other purpose the thing that sends the internet to the computer or to the router to send wirlessly is the modem.

You cannot stop your router from sending a wireless signal as that is its purpose.

If you want a wired connection - just use the modem :-)

    Hope this helps

  3. I know this doesn't answer your question but what does it matter if its giving out a wireless signal...it's not as though anyone else can use it and it wont affect anything...

    :S

  4. connect to the router (address 192.168.0.1 or similar) using a web browser. Details in the router manual

Find the section dealing with Wireless-LAN

    turn off/disable the access point

If the wireless is left switched on and the security isn't set up then anyone passing by can leach off your broadband,  (using up your allowance if it is limited) and of course anything illegal they up/download appears to belong to You

  5. Email me the make & model of router & I'll send instructions.
