How do I stop the IM from starting each time I turn on my laptop? I want to start it manually.?

I do not use it all of the time, so do not wish it to start on its own...

in the messenger window, on the top in ' messenger'  go to 'preferences'  then go to 'general' on the top there should be something saying ' i want to have messenger start up blahblah' just unclick that box

Usually, programs like an instant messenger will have a setting under preferences labeled "start this program when windows starts".  Unchecking this setting will stop the program from turning on when you turn on your laptop.

if you are using a windows XP or Vista, you can also type "msconfig" in the run field, choose selective starup, go to the starup tab and uncheck the "yahoo messenger.exe"   box...    or whichever messenger you are asking about.
