Question:

How do I strip wallpaper from plain drywall?

Some genius put wallpaper directly on drywall. I only figured this out after scoring the entire bathroom. I tried using Dif and it only loosens the border over the other wall paper. I can't get the wallpaper free from the drywall.

Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this???

Thanks!!!!

  1. Call or go to Wallpaper Warehouse, Home Depot, Lowes, some places such as these, and ask them if they have a product to help you, if nothing else, you can try steaming it off, it may do some damage tho that you may end up using some dry wall paste over later to smooth and then sand it down, but, better than tearing the walls out, they have a lot out now on the market and I would sure check around. Good luck.

  2. As far as I know, there's nothing you can do to strip wallpaper applied directly to drywall.

Short of ripping down all the drywall and starting again, try painting over the wallpaper and see if the scoring provides texture to your finish.

  3. Two possibilities i can think of.  Use a sponge soaked in warm water leave for a few seconds and you should be able to remove the wall paper that was dampened.  2.  If you have access to a steamer use that as that will break down the wallpaper paste that was originally used and you should be able to remove with a good scraper.

  4. You can't.  The water to loosen the wallpaper also loosens the paper sheet of the drywall.  I've painted such a wall with washable paint so wetness doesn't loosen either paper, then applied a thin coat of smooth drywall mud.  I then painted it and if someone puts up paper, they can get it off.   Less trouble and expense than replacing the drywall.  Do one wall at a time, you'll get the hang of it.

  5. You will have to replace the drywall. Anything you use will just make the drywall worse. The wetter you make the drywall it will harden and break easy. The drywall will almost become hard like plaster and chips easy. You have 1 of 2 choices to make either replace the drywall or you can give the wall a texture look. Take drywall mud, green lid, and using a 1 inch roller dip the roller into the bucket of mud and roll on to the wall this will dry and give a texture look. You can use a texture brush and add different patterens. Good luck.

  6. I just spray with warm water, let it set for a couple and start peeling it off.
