I have a 3 year old Dogue De Bordeaux. He is a perfect specimen and actually he's Hooch's(from Turner & Hooch) great great great grandson. He has his papers and everything I just don't know where to start when it comes to studding him out.

  1. How do you know he is a great specimen and an example of his breed? Has he won any CC / champ shows? NO? So you do not now if he is any good, you just like the look of him.

Leave breeding to people who actually know their breed and breed standard and stride to enhance their breed.

  2. You could put an add in the paper or talk to his original breeder...usually people find studs from ads or by word of mouth.

  3. Perfect, now all you have to do is show him. Once he's a champion, which PROOVES he's a perfect specimen, you have to make sure all his tests are high (OFAs and whatnot). Then we'll talk.

  4. Get him Neutered!   just because you want to stud him out does not make you a breeder.. sorry to say..

  5. You do not. There are too many homeless puppies out there getting put down, just because people want a certain kind of dog!

  6. Hey, it's like this !!!!! If you have to come on here to ask that question .... THEN YOU HAVEN'T DONE ENOUGH RESEARCH !!! SORRY BUT IT'S THE TRUTH ... THINK ABOUT IT !!! If you did all the research needed to bred you wouldn't need help .. you would already know what to do... but they ALL ARE RIGHT . Millions of dogs are put to sleep EVERY DAY .. because people ( like your self) want to bred thier babies ..... and didn't have the KNOWLEDGE to do it ... so then they give thier dogs to anyone .. JUST ANY ONE to make money.. cuz that's what it is about right ... Hooch ... it's about money .....

  7. You have to show him and earn his CH title on him first.

You will also need to do all the proper genetic health tests..  OFA, CERF, BAER, Optigen, PennHip, etc.

    Dont forget his brucellosis test.

No one will consider him for a stud unless these have been done.  He may be "perfect" in your eyes, but someone striving to improove the breed will be looking for a healthy dog that fits its breed standard..   they could care less about the papers or the fact that "Hooch" is in his pedigree.

To get into showing, start by looking into conformation classes..  or even attend a few shows and talk to some of the handlers there  www.infodog.com is a good place to seek upcoming shows in your area.

Also, I wouldnt trust a vet on advice regarding whether or not a dog is a "perfect" specimin.  Unless the vet is a reputable breeder, shows/handles, or judges that breed.. then his word isnt much valuable as far as judging your dog's conformation.

  8. If you need to ask this question here it is a sign that you don't know anywhere near enough to be breeding.

Please go do some serious research on responsible breeding.
