Question:

How do I swallow with expanders!?

I got upper expanders and they're kind of uncomfortable. I'm trying to get over the whole talking and speech impairment thing. But the most frustrating part is trying to swallow. I know it's because my tongue has no contact with the roof of my mouth, but I even have slight troubles trying to swallow water. I manage to gulp most of it, but then there's a lot of lingering water left over in my mouth that I just cannot swallow. I tried to eat soft, liquidy stuff like yogurt, but even that was too hard. Does anyone have any tips on making it easier to swallow stuff, because I know that I'll "eventually adapt to it", but I'm getting sick of hearing that.

  1. uggghhh..i know what you mean..it was horrible for the first week...after the first week it's fine...it get better..

  2. I just got done eating mashed potatoes, and i now realize that i should of only ate the potatoes and not the corn and peas. I just got expanders today myself and have been going through pain. I can't eat/talk correctly, and my cousins been making fun of me about it and i have been being laughed at, but i know there only kidding. But i didn't get any wax from my dentist. But everyone says that pretty soon the pain will go away and you will get used to it that you wouldn't even know its there. I got my expander at around 8 in the morning today, and have been having a rough time with it. But what i suggest it that you just continue (trying) to eat soft foods. Within 1 or 2 weeks everyday will be good. Oh yeah and our pain will probably fade the same day.
