Question:

How do I syphon water from an irrigation well?

I DO NOT want to buy a pump. Is it possible to syphon water from an underground irrigation well to water my yard? When I tried, I got a mouth full of water but it didn't flow. Doesn't the water source have to be above where the water will flow out, like a gas tank? Any other free/cheap ways to get water out of the irrigation?

  1. Syphons work only when the water flows from a higher to a lower level.

    You need a pump.

  2. the exit of the hose must be lower than the level of the water you want to siphon.  All a siphon does is allow the water to go up over an obstacle, but the water must exit lower than it started.

for your information, the highest obstacle you can over is about 32 feet.
