How do I take a Time Lapse picture?

I was at an art fair and this guy had taken some amazing pictures by keeping his shutter open or something like that and i was wondering A: how it is really done. and B: recommendations on good cameras for this sort of work

  1. You'll need a good SLR camera for this. All you do is place your camera on a tripod (to avoid camera shake) and open the lens of the camera.

    Look at the "B' settings on you camera  


  2. I'm not sure if you actually mean a time lapse video, or a long exposure photo. A time lapse is a video where you set the camera on a tripod, and take photos at equal intervals of time for a certain period of time. This can be done on any camera.They look like this:

    Long exposure is when the shutter is left open from any amount of time from 1 second to 30 seconds. To do this you leave the camera on a tripod, go into the manual settings on your camera to choose the shutter speed you desire, then you set the timer or have a cable release to avoid camera shake. These can be done on any camera that allows manual control of the shutter speed. All SLRs will and a large number of point and shoots will. Long exposure can light up photos at night that would otherwise turn out black. They can look like these photos:
