How do I take care of a fern?

I don't know what kind of fern I got because I didn't buy it. I took it off of a table. This is my first fern and I want to know:

1. How often to water it?

2. How often must I spray or mist it?

3. Can I keep it inside and grow it under a "solar" lamp?

4. I would like to split it and repot the other half. It it okay to do that?

And I am open to any suggestions.

  2. Different ferns have different needs.  You took it off a table?

    Was it inside or outside?

Most like a good soak until the water is running out the bottom of the  pot.  If you stick your finger down to the second joint and the soil feels moist, don't water it.  Feed it every two weeks with a light fertilizer.

Misting will depend on where you live, usually just keep a bowl of water near the plant, unless you live in a very dry climate.

Keep it near a window where it get indirect light.

If your fern appears to be growing from more than one point, then you should be able to split it and repot the two halves.

  3. General rule of thumb:

Keep the direct sunlight to 2 hours or less and keep then watered.
