  1. We HAD them for years. (I'll tell you that story in a min.)  But first with that many you need to get a 5 gallon or 10 gallon fish tank.  Add a little water in the bottom prob. 1-2 inch.  put large shells, rocks, wood, etc. for them to climb up on.  And your local pet store or Wal-mart sells crab food.  Now the story:(  We had 3 for about 2 years and they were always changing shells or crawling out of there tank.  One Saturday morning I was cleaning the bathroom where they stayed and I washed a load of towels.  I was my towels on HOT water.  Yep you guessed it Crab Legs,  they had crawled into the towels and I washed the little stinkers on hot.  My daughter screamed and screamed, I cried and cried, my husband LAUGHED AND LAUGHED.

  2. sorry to say, i'm not trying to be mean but wild hermit crabs are dangerous you might want to put them back and go to a pet store to get some...ummm but go ahead if you want and feed them fruits like apple and grapes or ummm look at these sites...  http://www.the-hermie-hut.piczo.com

  3. You can keep them, but you basically need to set up a rockpool tank.

No heater, but you will need a filter and normal water changes with fresh salt water. Depending on the species they may be fully aquatic, or partly and need to crawl out of the water occasionally. So maybe start with the tank 1/2 full and set up some rocks or driftwood so they can climb out of the water.

One of the main problems is often keeping the temperature down in coldwater marine tanks. But rock pool species like that are pretty tollerant.

But if you dont have a tank set up for them I would take them back to the beach and get an environment set up for them first.Doing a bit of homework before you get them makes life a lot easier.

They will eat almost anything, but you can buy food specially formulated for crabs and crayfish. Otherwise normal sinking fish food pellets will work, and scraps of fresh fish and shrimp.

I have kept them in the past, they are very interesting critters and it's quite possible to keep them in a tank.

  5. I think the best way to care for hermit crabs you took from the beach is to put them back on the beach, and let nature work at it. That was their home :)
