I have an old fashioned 40' radio/tv antennae on the back of my house that I would like to take down, but have no clue how. I also wonder if it can work to receive HDTV broadcasts.

  1. Leave it up, big antenna towers are great. I wish i had one. I would hook up a ham radio receiver, ham transmitter, CB base station, scanner, 802.11 access point (log all traffic and see what people are up to for fun), a shortwave receiver, satellite for TV, and whatever else you can pick up off the air, just add the right antenna.

To take them down most people just cut the up until they get to the ground, since you have to cut it up anyways to dispose it. I personally would remove it with a rope and pickup truck combo.

If its aluminum bring it to a scrap yard and get some money for it.

  2. one foot at a time.

  3. #2 first. HDTV over a antique Tower no way!. That's like getting lifelike images on the first black/white TV :)....

The hard-part. Taking it down... If there is nobody around the 40' perimeter simply get  as high as you can with a ladder use a hacksaw/jigsaw/ saw-zall and cut it at the halfway point or height you reach and try to lean it in a open area and cut the rest at the base and do the same. If people are around I'd reccomend getting some people together and cutting it 10 feet up and guide it down with help. It shouldnt weigh more then a 4 person team can handle. :-D Cheers Good luck :)

  4. I agree with Masterop, a tower can be handy, but if you think it is an eyesore, I think I know a way to take care of getting it removed.

Many HF ham radio operators would love to have such a tower.         Contact a ham radio club in your area and tell them they can have the tower if they will remove it safely.  They know how to get the job done.  They will hustle their buns.
