  1. You can't simply divide a rose like some other shrubs, since it has a single trunk. You must root a stem from your bush. There are many methods to do this, but the most surefire way for a home gardener is to take a small soft plastic container that can be easily cut.Cut  down the side, and to the center of the bottom.Next cut a hole just large enough to fit around a stem of your bush. Remove the leaves onthe stem that will be below the soil line, and cut a small wedge out of the stem on each side. Apply a rooting hormone to the cuts. You will place the container around the stem, tie or tape the container closed, and fill with a good quality potting soil.If you do this right now you should have sufficient roots before the winter to cut it off below the ciontainer, and get it in the ground before temps. hit freezing. This method allows you to have a larger rooted plant to start with, and allows safer rooting because the stem is still getting water and nutrients from the mother plant while it is rooting.Just make sure the soil in the container doesn't completely dry out during the process.Hybrid roses are grafted to a wild rose rootstock, which gives them a stronger root system, and more disease resistance.I have had good luck with rooted stems on their own root system,so give it a try!

  2. You don't take part, you take the whole thing unless it's a shrub rose and is sending up suckers all over the place.  Then best done in much cooler weather , not now, too much trauma.  Just dig down, take a good root ball and either put into a container and grow on there for awhile or immediately transplant to a new spot.
