He's just a year old, I just got him, hes not skidish, but nice and sweet. I don't now what to do with him first. I ride in barrel racing compititions and can handle a horse.

  1. Fool with this little sucker every day LOL! Touch his ears and just get him used to you. After that you might could try sittin on him bareback. I have a two year old that I am Training and i ride her bareback with a egg butt bit. Then maybe put a saddle on him for a few mins everyday and get him used to that and just keep makin progress...

  2. Just take your time with him and don't rush him.  Introduce him to new experiences, but don't overwhelm him.

Ideally you want to be backing him (ie getting him used to something on his back) at the age of about 2, but don't even think about riding him properly till he is 3 at the youngest.

Each horse takes to training differently: some are fast learners, others take time and patience.  If you've never trained a young horse before, get some advice.  The early years are the most crucial part of training a horse and if you do it wrong you can ruin the horse for life.
