There's this stupid sticker that comes on the tank of the Yamaha VStar 650 and I can't figure out how to take it off without messing up the tank. It's made of this really brittle stuff so you can't just peel it off. I've managed to chip some of it off which only made it look worse. Any ideas?

  1. I would be more concerned with the fact that that model has a problem with throwing a rod at about 45,000 miles. I have repaired around 20 of them all with the same mileage and thrown rod.

  2. you need to use rubbing alcohol to dissolve the sticky adhesive. Soap does not work b/c it is water based and the glue is not very water based.

  3. A hair drier & this stuff called goo gone (hardware/auto) store will do the job just fine.

  4. Heat gun, is the accepted method.

But for those that don't have a heat gun, borrow your mother's or sister's or wife's hand-held HAIR DRYER, put it on max heat and low airflow and it makes pretty nice substitute.

Peel it off gently but very carefully.  Most of these things have a sort of Varnish on them to protect them from sun and wear. You'd like it to come of in few big pieces, rather than a bunch of small pieces.

  5. Leave it alone!  If it didn't belong there, the manufacturer wouldn't have put it there.  Wait until you dump it and need the tank repainted, then have them sand it off before they paint it.  Not trying to be a wise guy...but it's just a matter of time until you take a spill...EVERYONE does eventually.
