How do I talk to someone new?

I read in a poll several days ago asking that if they would date a stranger, and everybody said no (there was a good # of questions). So how can I talk to someone new if I'm interested in them?

If they are a total stranger then obviously there is something attracting you to them, correct?  Is it a book that they read?  Something they have on, there must be room in there somewhere for a conversation started.  At the least, what you want to do is definitely introduce yourself - this is the first phase to no longer being a stranger.

Obviously you don't have to ask them out on a date at the time of your first introduction.  After the end of the first conversation, just say, 'Is it alright if I call you some time?'  After several conversations after time past by then you're no longer a stranger.  Perhaps the poll was referring to blind dates - people they've never met or seen.
