  1. read to her a lot. but she will learn on her own time;

  2. There are many things you can do to help a child read, using flash cards is not one of them, I wouldn't suggest that.  Rather you can start teaching her sight words.  Sight words are words that can not be sounded out such as the, what, where, when, they, this, etc these are appropriate in the form of flash cards and really are just memorization of the letters in the word.  To start your child reading, as in sounding words out start with word families such as -op, op sounds like op, what if I add a h, m, p, etc.  One good way to do this is to make a file folder for each word family, there are many word families and are easily thought up or you can google it.  Make the ending on one card and then the letters that go with the ending to form a word, ex. h on one card, op on another, make it into a game, who can get the most words!  As your daughter gets more advanced add in letters that don't belong to challenge her.  This has worked for my daughter who was reading before Kindergarten, keep in mind parents are childrens first teachers!  It is possible for children to read BEFORE Kindergarten!!

  3. Well I would just get some flash cards and read the step into reading books for her age.  They usually have just one sentence on a page.  She really doesnt have to know that before she starts kindergarten.  Thats what school is there for, they will teach her.  Nobody expects a 5 year old to have it all down perfectly.

  4. i don´t think you should stress her with that cause that´s why teachers are there and if she knows the whole abc and the sound of the letters then she only has to learn three words and i am sure the teacher can do this.my daughter allso had problems with p and b but she learned them very fast with a teacher,me and kindergarden!!!!

  5. A typically developing child will learn to read in Kindergarten, however, you know your child best and if she's ready...go for it!  We've had much luck with the book Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons by Siegfried Engelmann.  Barnes and Noble carries it and you can order it from Amazon.com...about $20.  I change it to make it more interesting at times but recommend it very much.  Don't go by just my word, though!  Check out the reviews.

    Good luck!

  6. She's not suppose to be able to read before she starts school.

    Relax.  Let her learn at her own pace.  If she's not ready, give her some time.

    If you push you will only create anxiety.

  7. Why do you want her to read before K?  She is perfectly normal not pronouncing or confusing certain letters at this point.  I would just continue to read to her as much as you can.  Is she in school now?  They will help her with letter sound and recognition.  She will start to read before you know it!

  8. I wouldn't be in a hurry.  Every child develops individually.  Don't force it.

  9. Start with the "Reader Rabbit" books.  They are a great help and are tons of fun.  YOu can even get a computer program that goes along with them.

  10. My daughter started grade 1 with her first name and a few three letter words.  I then had her read each reader from school over and over.  I volunteered in her classroom and got tips from the teacher. That was 6 years ago ... she is still the best reader in her classs an is an A student.

  11. Check Usborne Books for great resources!  http://www.ubah.com/g2687

    Look at Learning Palette products, workbooks, Your Baby Can Read DVDs - Usborne Books are great products that kids love!

  12. she will learn how to read IN kindergarten - with sight words and sounding out phonetically.  If she's ready to start reading at home, she'll let you know by asking 'what word is this?" or "what does this word mean?".   So, you can pick your cues up from her so you aren't pushing her too soon. Good luck.  Sounds like you understand the importance of early literacy.   Play rhyming games a lot too  - they love it.

  13. Children are  really not developmentally ready to read until 6-7 years old. In many Scandinavian countries they do not teach the kids to read until they are in first grade. The worse thing you can do is push to much and put pressure on your daughter. Our kinders. are only required to know their letters and the sounds for each letters. They learn to read in first grade.

  14. I didn't learn to read till the middle of kindergarten. Each child has their own learning time. Who cares what others think?

  15. Set aside a time for reading with her every night.  I know a four year old who loves to "read" to her parents every night.  They usually read a book to her and then she reads either by looking at the picture or by recalling what she's previously heard.  Your daughter will read in her own time.  The best thing that you can do is be a positive role model for what a good reader looks like.
