How do I teach my puppy to come when called?

I have two 5-month old maltese puppies. When I send them out in the yard, one will come back to the door when called, the other one just totally ignores me. I have tried to use a single comand (come), I used a stern voice, I've even gone out and tried to "herd" him in like sheep, but he just takes off running. What is the best way to train him? This is SO frustrating!

  1. first start of in the house and keep calling hes or hers name and bend down and clap and if it comes to you say good boy and give him like a treat but you have to practice it for maybe lik 4-5 days

  2. You have to make it exciting for him to come back to you, if you are stern with him he is less likely to come.  If he has something like a favourite toy or food call him back and entice him with it, then praise and reward him when he comes.

  3. you can start training him to come simply. use his leash, and some treats. hold his leash (attached to him) and say "come" as you pull him towards you , reward him if he comes nicely. work on it every day and before you know it he comes when you say "come"

                     i hope this helped!!!!

  4. Most puppies like to stay close to their 'leader' however some tend to wander more than others.

A good way that's always worked for me is to get the pup to notice you and then run: try to get the pup to chase you- if he does, call his name.

You've got to make him want to come to you.

Keep on this until he starts to associate his name with coming to you.

Make sure you use lots of praise- a few treats may not hurt either.

    Good luck.

  5. You could start with him in the house and when you say "come" give him a piece of chicken when he comes to you. You can do that for a while and then he should learn to come when called when he is in the yard.

  6. try bringing him to door after chase hold on lead you inside him just out pull him in give praise and treat repeat until he gets it then remove treat replace with play and or praise btw a shaker bottle works for bad behavior problems barking chewing etc. fill pop plastic with small rocks or coins shake and say no praise when stops and be consist ant

  7.   You could offer a reward for the behavior you want. Lots of praise is always good. You have to show the dog that you are the dominant member of your pack. I had a neighbor who would hit her dog when it did not come to her. Why would a dog want to go someplace it was going to be hit? It would never come to her as a result and she just got madder. It would come to me right away when I called it. My Greyhound got out last week and it took me 15 minutes to get her back but it was because she was curious about where she was and she was hunting. When she did come to me I praised her and petted her even though I was frustrated and pissed.

  8. you say his name repeatedly whenever you get the chance then when he come you give him a treat after awile he will come when you call him
