How do I teach someone how to read?

My cousin is in the 3rd grade and he doesn't know how to read yet. And if he doesn't learn how to read this summer than he'll have to repeat the 3rd grade. Im only 12 and my aunt and mother would like for me to teach him how to read. And I dont want to let him just repeat the 3rd grade. He is almost 10. How do I teach him to read? Yes I have many books but im not quite sure what to do. Do i just read the book to him? Or what?

  1. Hooked on Phonics

  2. teach him the alphabet first and make sure he understand each letter and then teach him the sounds of each letter.

  3. Hook on phonics is the best way....patients other than that.

  4. have alot of patience while teaching him-

teach him how to pronounce different letters in the alphabet

include how things like ph sound like f and teach to pronounce things like ch and how some letters are silent when reading them.

SOUNDING things out is always the best. READ ALOT of books together-him pernouncing the words

  5. well you  start  teaching him  the basics of reading  and teach  him how you sound out words ... ex:  the sounds of a  letter !

  6. I believe the first step you should take is going over the alphabet with your cousin. Teach him the letter sounds and how to pronounce them. It will also be helpful if you give him easy children's books to read such as Dr. Seuss's "Cat in the Hat." Reading a book to your cousin is also a good strategy. It will help him hear the words and their pronunciation. Just be sure to take things easy and be very patient. Good luck!

  7. Get the book "Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons".  We homeschool and both of my brothers learned to read using this book.  Its actually harder for the teacher than the child.  If you choose to use it, use it exactly as it says to.

    Good Luck!

  8. Teach him alphabet letters first. Then teach him to read tiny words like, "Toy", "Boy," and how to pronounce it. Then teach him how to read books with big big letters.

  9. People remember things best in twos, and right before they go to sleep is the best time to learn.

You need to determine how well he can read right now -- can he sound out words?  Does he know what sounds go with what letters?  Sometimes repetitious writing is a good strategy.

Or, have him type from a book into a word processing program.  This will doubly reinforce the idea that words are spelled a certain way, and will help him to read and write at the same time.

Also, try associating words and letters with visual images he's already familiar with.  Encourage him to ask questions about words he doesn't understand.  Find the kind of book he likes, most of all.  Look at what sort of movies, video games, etc. he's into to give you clues on his preferences.  Buy (or use) two copies of any book you read, one for him, one for you.  Be patient.  This site might be helpful: http://www.starfall.com/

  10. My friends sister has a reading disability, maybe your cousin has one too, see if you can get him tested or something
