Question:

How do I tell if I'm a dual citizen or not?

My dad was born and raised in England and moved to America in his late 20's and married my American mother and had me.

My dad isn't a citizen, but he has a green card. Does this make me a dual citizen? My dad said that it does, but I've also read that there is a possibility that I'm not, and that it sometimes varies on when my parents were married, or when I was born, and some other stuff.

THANK YOU!

(Also, if you just happen to know, what are the benefits and drawbacks of dual citizenry?)

  1. If your dad was a British citizen then you are a British citizen by descent. Your children will not be British citizens unless you do something to change you type of citizenship(such as move to the UK and live there).

  2. You don't qualify to have your birth registered at the British embassy. That is because you are probably automatically British by Descent and over 1 year old. These two factors together mean that you can't be registered.

However, if you're born in wedlock and your dad was British at the time of your birth then you are most likely British.

If you are considered a dual citizen then you can apply for a British passport at the UK embassy.

  3. you ARE a british citizen
