Depends, is he abusive? If so then don't tell him in person. Tell him over the phone, email, or through another person. And give him a good reason so he doesn't ask why constantly.

i don't think there's a one size fits all answer to that situation.  there are many circumstances probably involved that nobody else knows about other than you.  i suggest you take your time and read , to h**l with  h**l, a book that my friend loaned to me to read because i was in a similar situation as you are now.  it helped me tremendously.  it may not sound, by the title, that it deals with this type stuff, but it does in a way that is clear and easily understood.  i recommend you get it.  b&n dot com or amazon dot com.  good luck

Any way, apart from texting or emailing.  Telling your partner you want to break up via text or email is pathetic, and shows you don't have enough backbone to face him yourself.

Talk to him face to face, unless you think he will get over-emotional or aggressive.. in that case, over the phone.
