Question:

How do I tell my family that I'm moving to another country?

I feel about ready to cry just thinking about telling them. I know they are going to tell me what a stupid idea it is and that I shouldn't go. My father is also very sensitive so he's going to take it personally and think that the reason I'm moving is because I don't like them anymore. How do I tell them? What do I say?

  1. That is a big move. Why exactly are you going?  You have to be able to talk about your reasons and what you plan to do there that you cannot do in your own country.

The truth is, you need to be up front with them and truly determined to be successful when you tell them.  You cannot be wishy-washy.  They will jump all over that idea.

Your ideas have to be absolutely strong in order for telling them to work.

You should also talk about communication, trips back and forth, accommodations, transportation, safety, and people to support you.  If you are lacking these things, then you should not be off to another country.

I assume that you are an adult.  You need to act like one in order for this to work.

  2. You say:

"Mom, Dad, look at the wonderful dinner I cooked you!! Please join me! I love you both very much and have a great opportunity to move to (insert country) to pursue my dream of (insert why you are leaving). I have already planned for you guys to come visit for (insert number of weeks you can stand them visiting) in (insert month). I am going to miss you so much but this is a great opportunity!!!! Want to go out for ice cream?"

  3. I had to do this about 11 years ago, so I know what you must be going through.

My advice is to sit them down and explain why you are moving and where you are moving to and also how often you would be able to see each other.  They are your parents and will love you always-whether you move or not.  You are an adult and ultimately you have to make the right choices and decisions to suit your life. You cannot live a life where you have to worry about your parents all the time - i am sure they wouldnt want that in any case.
