Question:

How do I tell my parents I am a vegetarian?

I was a vegan my entire life but lately I am leaning more toward a vegetarian diet. I started eating dairy when I am out with friends (ice cream, starbucks non-soy products, etc..) and even had non-vegan desert at friend's houses. At home I still eat vegan meals but whenever I am out I always opt. for the vegetarian meal. How can I tell my parents I am vegetarian without them getting angry? I have no problem eating vegan food that they cook and do not expect my dad to cook 2 meals. i could easily not tell them but it would make them upset if they find out without me telling them.

  1. First tell them to promise they wouldn't get angry then tell them.

    Best of luck :-)

    P.S Even I'm a vegetarian

  2. "mom, dad, i'm a vegetarian"

then explain to them why. im sure they'll understand

and its wayy better for them to find out from you.

  3. "I've decided to start eating dairy and eggs."

Simple as that. They probably won't get mad.

  4. since you already caved on the dairy you might as well start eating meat.

  5. Sometimes honesty is the best way. I know it's hard.. it was hard for me. My father was the worst, he nearly disowned me. But eventually he came around to accept me. It's my life and I choose what to put in my mouth. No more secrets. No more hiding boca burgers in the back of the freezer. I feel liberated

  6. Tell them you have something important to tell them. Then tell them you're straight. When they freak out about that, then say you're just kidding and you just want them to know you're vegetarian. They will be so relieved it wasn't the other thing that it won't be such a big deal.

  7. I don’t say meat eating is wrong, and veganism is right. Veganism is not absolutely right if Raw Veganism put into judgment, Fruitarians are superior, and so on, but …

First of all, you just need to ADMIT the follow :

    1) You are one of most fortunate than those millions dying on hunger/starvation, and those struggling hard evolving from meater to vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. It was the God's plan you born to a vegan family (aren't you!). You may not be well informed by your parents for being a vegan, but their purpose is the noble one.

    2) Your failure is your parent's end result, and we (V&V) are not deserved to blame you. You’ve done your best.

    3) Thank your parents for keeping you in pink of HEALTH (Vegan diet), smarter than the average persons (Other V&V fans pls notice this FACT). Reasons for your parents being Vegan is most probably the greatest SACRIFICE, and obviously for SELFLESS reasons. You should proud of it.

    3) Being a Vegan, unfortunately incapable to influence others, but you realize that difficult to live among other society members.

    4) Being a Vegan, you should already know that consuming dairy products directly supporting the cruel veal industry as well.

    5) No one is perfect, and you just knowingly suffering in ignorance.

Now, you go home and tell your reasons why you retreat. This is a free country, and no one has the right to impose on you… conscience, intuition!

  8. How do i tell my parents I am g*y?

  9. Just tell them. Sometimes you have to experiment in your life as you grow up to find who you are - your parents instill as much as they can in you, hoping you live a life that reflects their values, but in the end you are your own complete person and you're the final say about what matters to you and what does not matter to you.

Talk to them about it honestly, and find out where their opposition to dairy and eggs lie. Talk to them about what aspects have influenced you to move towards a less strict vegetarian diet.

See if you can see eye to eye - they might not understand your position, and you might not agree with theirs, but this open communication will help you understand the motives behind the actions more, not just the actions themselves. That's a primary cause for anger and frustration -when people see an action but don't understand the causes. It might be easy for them to be angry if they just see your become lacto-ovo-vegetarian, but if they understand all the factors and your own personal thoughts on it, they might see it a whole different way.

Remember that dairy products contain casein and other things that have opiate-like effects on you, so also consider how much of it is really you making the choice to eat so much dairy versus your own body's inherent craving for it. The natural sugar complexes and biochemical make-up of dairy is designed to addict mammals to their mother's breastmilk, to keep them growing and smitten with it's sweet, intoxicating flavor. You're feeding yourself with the stuff that's supposed to fatten a calf up by hundreds of pounds in the first year of life. Clearly it would have to be darn tasty and addicting.
