How do I text someone in America?

I live in Japan and I want to text someone's cellphone in Utah.

How do I do it? I have AU...

I'm assuming there will be a 0 or 001 at the start of their number, if so then all you need to do is replace the 0/001 with +1 as that is the international dialling code for a mobile in America.

If there isn't a 0 or 001 at the start then put in +1 before their number and it should work.

A couple of examples below, i just made up the first three digits as I don't know what's generally used

Was 001 555 xxxx

Now +1555 xxxx

Was 555 xxxx

Now +1555 xxxx

You would just text them with country code + area code + phone number. Example:    Country code + 415 + 444-4444  OR  Country code + 1415 + 444-4444

AU phones do not have SMS capability; they DO have cmail which is similar to SMS but only connects to other AU subscribers. most US cell networks have email to sms capability and sending an SMS is generally as simple as sending an email to their telephones email address (which varies depending on the cellular network but is something similar to their telephone number@ whatever their carrier's gateway server address is.... i.e [e-mail]

if that is not possible you can connect via the website to chikka.net which is a website for a system that allows you to send SMS directly from your computer to any other SMS recipient.

most phones in Japan are capable of sending email which is almost always going to be less expensive. the person(s) in the US that you are wanting to send SMS to probably has a Yahoo or AOL messenger client built into their phone which can tie directly to a free email address that will relay directly to their phone. this can be much more flexible and is how i do most of my messaging since i can "disconnect" my phone whenever i am at the computer and not get charged the outrageous SMS charges.
