Question:

How do I transfer car title from NJ to PA?

Hi, I will be buying a car for the first time in NJ (from a dealer) and will shortly thereafter be moving it to Philadelphia. How does the process of registration work? It seems confusing and I have no idea!

I have a permanent address in Philly and will be able to provide insurance information. Will the dealer give me an NJ title? Will I need a Vin tracing and odometer reading? Where do I get the VIN tracing from?

If someone could please clarify this process that'd be great!

  1. Ok... if you title the vehicle in NJ and transfer it to PA within 6 months you will have to pay sales tax again in PA.  I don't know what NJ tax is, but PA tax is 6%.

I would give the NJ dealer your PA information.  In most cases for out of state deals, the dealer mails you the title or MCO and you register it in your home state.

I believe NJ will issue a "Temporary Registration Certificate" to drive the vehicle to PA. You have 15 or 30 days to get it titled in PA.

You are definitely better off to go ahead and title it in the state where you want it in the end because it will save you lots of fees.

Procedure to title an out of state vehicle in PA is as follows:

You need a PA license or photo ID

    Valid proof of insurance

    Title or MCO

*Registration if you are transferring a plate*

and the vehicle must be at the title agent when you do the paperwork because they must verify that the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the vehicle.

  2. Obtain PA Vehicle Title,and/or Registration Card with License Plate with no Hassle!

    OUTLINE OF REQUIREMENTS :

    1. TITLE or MCO/MSO

    2. INSURANCE, ( Binder, Declaration Page, or Ins.ID Card )

    3. VIN TRACING,ODOMETER READING,PURCAHSE DATE

    4. POWER OF ATTORNEY, only if purchaser and or seller is unavailable. ( Limited to application for Title & Registration in applicants name as listed on title ONLY )

  3. Try logging onto the PA DMV website, it gives you all the info and forms to fill out to complete the transfer.  I believe you also have x*x amount of months to complete it also.
