How do I transfer files between my 2 computers?

I have some very large files that I need to transfer from one to another, and they are too large to fit on DVD or my Ipod.

Is it possible to just use one of my cable modem cords to establish an ethernet connection between the 2 comps?

You need a crossover cable, but yes.
