Question:

How do I transition from Banking career to Accounting?

I have 8 years experience in Banking (Operations and Mortgage) I have a degree in business and have taken 5 accounting courses in college but I have never worked in accounting and therefore have no accounting experience. However my banking experience I believe can be relevant in my job search. How do I apply for accounting positions? Should I start with bookkeeping or Accounting assistant/ trainee? Where do I look for those kinds of jobs? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  1. There are a lot of places to get accounting jobs including the Federal Government, the State, the City and county, large and small corporations.

If you have had five courses in college, you probably know enough to get almost any beginning level job.  I have worked at a lot of jobs in auditing and some of the best auditors I've worked with had little or no accounting training.  One guy had a degree in geology, another a degree in journalism, another had a degree in math and one had no degree at all.

Unless you majored in accounting it is not likely that a large CPA firm would hire you, but some of the smaller ones might.
