Question:

How do I transition to whole milk?

My daughter will be one in three weeks so it's coming up quick. With my older daughter I went straight to milk when she turned one and it was a big mistake bc she got real constipated. So do I just give her a little bit during the day or do I mix it like half formula half milk?

  1. When my son turned one I just started giving him milk and never had a problem with it. But I have heard that you should mix formula and milk to start the transition. At first do 1/4 milk and the rest formula and 1/2 milk 1/2 formula and so on until it is just strictly milk. Good Luck!

  2. you don't...cow milk is for baby cows

  3. If she is already on a milk based formula then she has been preparing for this transition. Start with some 2% milk in a sippy cup and replace the formula mixed with her cereal to milk.  Gradually increase the change with a bottle feeding.  We did not go to whole milk right away since our kids were on breast and soy formula.  When we did they had loose stools.  This was recommended by their pediatrician.  Gradually increase the regular milk portions, we did not mix the formula and milk per our pediatrician.  The transition for us took about a week.  Our oldest never could take the transition and is still on soy milk by her choice.  Good luck.

  4. When I transitioned my daughter, I started by mixing part formula and part milk.  My DD has a sensitive tummy, so I did 1/4 milk, 3/4 formula for a few days, then 1/2 and 1/2 for a few days, then 3/4 milk, 1/4 formula.  That worked well for her.  She had no issues with it that way.

  5. I mixed the formula with milk and just gradually put in more and more milk so like now put in a thrid milk and the rest formula, next week do half milk and half formula and the third week do 3/4 milk and 1/4  formula and then by the 4th week she will be transitioned over

  6. You can start by giving her some in a sippy once a day for a week or so just to see if it upsets her tummy.  If she does ok, then I would starting adding a little to each bottle.  Start with just 1 oz or so in each bottle and continue that for several days so you can watch for stomach problems and constipation.  If she slows down on BMs I would cut back the milk some and increase the formula.

If she's handling it well, I would just increase the amount of milk (and reduce the amount of formula) by 1oz every 4 or 5 days until it's all milk.  Just make sure you start giving her multivitamins and use whole milk only.  Good luck!
