How do I translate a series of 1's and 0's (bits or bytes?) into letters I can understand?

computers use 1's and 0's to make letters, how do I translate it?

It's called binary.  Do a search for binary conversion and you will find out all about it.  You can even find programs to do it for you, but do it a little by hand or in your head first so you at least understand it for yourself.
