Question:

How do I treat bad water?

I just bought 5 tiger barbs and an algae eater. 3 of the barbs are dead, as well as the algae eater. I'm assuming it's the water. Is there something I can treat the water with in order to save my other two barbs from the same fate of the other fish?

  1. Did you cycle your tank?  How long did you go between water changes?  What kind of filter do you have?

  2. check if you have added the anti-clorine to your water.

if you take tap water,it's a must to nutralize the water with the anti-clorine.or use some other water treatment chemicals used for tropical fish.

make sure there is oxygen supply too and a good water filter device.

  3. well first of all, if you just set up the tank, then you need to not put that many fish in there at once. you should only put in about 1-3 fish and wait 2 weeks before you add any so the bacteria in the water doesnt react bad cuz the filter has to maintain the tank and keep the tank running smooth before you can make is semi- dirty. best thing to do now is take out the fish, clean the tank very well and do a 80 percent water change. remeber to not add so much cemichals cuz that will definately kill your fish. sorry about the disappointment

                 -Hope this helps!

  4. you can't just assume you need to check your your water for nitrates ,ph ,kh ,gh and other things. buy a test kit

  5. if you didn't cycle the tank before adding the fish than the cycle process is what probley killed them adding chemicals isn't the soluation testing the water and doing partial water changes anytime the ammonia level gose over 1.0 also only feed a small amount once a day everyother day

  6. use a test kit to see whats wrong
