I purchased an 16' diameter x 3' 6" high Intek pool that comes with it's own filter. Before I purchase any expensive products I wanted to know what I need to do first.

  1. You need a testing kit and chlorine tablets.  You also need something to change the pH (there will be products next to the chlorine) if it gets out of whack.  It's a small pool, so you don't need to get the industrial sized container or anything.  The cheapest testing kit will be fine.  You usually would add the chlorine through a floating dispenser, if there isn't a place to do it near the filter.  Also, make sure you have a pool-cleaning net to get grass, bugs, and other assorted floating c**p out of it.

You should test the water daily, but will probably only have to add chemicals every couple of days.

  2. First thing is to get testing strips they are at your local pool supply store . Also bring a sample of your water ( a used  water bottle ) . They will tell you how much chlorine , acid , conditioner and soda ash you need . Add what they tell you and keep checking the water levels to make sure every thing is in balance . Check your water once a week . Do not let your pool get out of balance . catching up and killing alga is expensive and time consuming.
