How do I unlock new courses in Mario Kart Wii?

I read somewhere online that in order to unlock a new course (or cup), you must get 3rd place or higher at the end of the cup. So I started up Mario Kart Wii and chose single player, grand prix, and 100cc. I then chose the cup I wanted to race. The race(s),(there are four) started, and I did very well. When all four races (the whole cup) were over, it went into the games little awards ceramony where I was given 1st place, but for some reason it didn't unlock any of the locked/hidden cups. What am I doing wrong here?

You have to beat both the Mushroom and Flower cups to unlock the Star cup.    Then beat the Star cup to unlock the special cup.

Same goes for the Retro tracks.  Beat the Shell and Banana cups to unlock the Leaf cup.  Then beat the Leaf cup to unlock the Lightning cup.

Make sure for each GP cup you have at least gold. There's 50, 100, 150 & Mirror Mode. That's it.  If you come in first place in every race you should get a star. once you have gotten at least one star in EVERY GP MODE & CUP you'll have almost everything unlocked.  Now go to the Time Trials.  Unlock the Pro level ghost for each TT and you'll get the last few vehics/characters.- Go to gamefaq.com and there's a list in the MKWii forums for the times you need to unlock each pro ghost.  You don't have to beat the pro ghost, just unlock it.

just beat the courses in the Grand prix mode with atleast a C ranking. Unlockable Races

Leaf Cup - Win at least 3rd place in Banana Cup

Lightning Cup - Win at least 3rd place in Leaf Cup

Special Cup - Win at least 3rd place in Star Cup

Star Cup - Win at least 3rd place in Flower Cup

Mirror Mode - Win all Cups at 150cc

You have to play through every single cup to get anything else including mirror mode after 150cc
