  1. First, it's FIRMware, not FIREware.

    The exact procedure varies somewhat, but basically you download a copy of the latest firmware for each specific machine, burn it to a DVD (or order from Sony/Toshiba on disk), put the update disk in the player. You then use the menu system to navigate to the update section and "tell" the player to update.

    CAUTION: you can ruin your player if you don't do the update correctly (particularly if the power is turned off or the update is interrupted before completed) ... so find and follow the instruction for each specific player exactly (See links for a starting point). Note that updating the firmware will also reset all options to factory default ... so if you have made changes take note before doing the update.

    Firmware updates are worth doing if they give you improved capabilities or solve problems, but because of the risk involved it is advised to verify that you will benefit before doing an update.
