Question:

How do I upgrade the bathtub to a tub/shower?

Right now it's just a tub. I'm ok with projects like this but I might need some advice first.

If I shop at Lowes, would someone help me know what to buy, or is it up to me to know what to do and they just sell it?

Should I hire a plumber? Any ideas what that would cost?

  1. depending on how comfortable you are with plumbing, you may want to call a plumber. Lowe's sells tub/shower inserts. You will need to know the dimensions of the old tub as well as if the faucet and drain is on the left or right. These inserts usually come in 4 pieces (tub, left wall, right wall, and back wall). You will have to get some new hardware to add the shower head and controls. Tools such as a pipe (tube) bender,  brazing torch, and a rotary tool (to cut a hole for the shower head to come through. SPECIAL NOTE: Most inserts are designed with a "lip" that fits behind drywall or paneling. You may have to do some drywall work also.

  2. You will need to replace the valve that is inside the wall. The ones for showers have an extra outlet on the top that the shower piping is connected to. You also need a diverter valve ot tubspout with one built in. Talk to the Plumbing Manager at Lowes and he should be able to show you what you need.
