How do I upload a picture of myself for AIM profiles??

Ok, so most all of my buddies that I have on my buddy list have a pic of themselves or someone else for their little icon thingy on AIM profiles. I asked my friend how she did it and she said that i have to download it on my comp then somehow upload it but everytime i click browse it nvr works!! instead the line comes up that u get in microsoft word. so.. plz help!!!
