I have a Samsung Digital cam NTSC Mini DV. Model #SCD103. I recorded something onto a tape that was in the camcorder. Is there a way I could upload the video on the tape to my desktop sony computer? What kind of cable do I need? USB? I don't really care about the speed of the uploading, just if it will upload my videos onto my computer.

  1. SInce it's a MiniDV camcorder you need to capture the video via firewire.  If your PC doesn't have one already, firewire cards are cheap, easy to install and readily available.  You can capture and edit the footage using Windows Movie Maker, or invest a few more $$ and get a more powerful one.

  2. Hey Megan,

You would need to get a converter box, and the deck to transport the tape into your computer, you can find more tips on my web guide about uploading videotapes to your computer...

  3. All miniDV tape based camcorders transfer their video from their DV port, over a firewire cable through the firewire port on your computer.

Firewire, IEEE1394a and i.Link are all the same thing.

Adding a firewireport to your computer is typically easy (and cheap) to do.

You will need a cable too (no the manufacturers have not been including them in the box with the camcorder)

Then you can "capture" the video with MovieMaker.

  4. Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder.

  5. generally speaking you'll need a firewire lead and card to import videos. usb 2.0 can do it but only smaller clips.

all mini dv transfers as in real time and can't be sped up or slowed down.
