How do I upload recorded TV shows from a DVR onto a video disk?

We have satellite service. I know that people who have cable/Tivo can put their saved programming onto some kind of memory medium and then transfer it to a readable dvd. Can I do it? Legally? How?

Buy yourself a DVR with DVD burning capability.  Toshiba is ready to market a DVR with HD recording/burning capabilities.  Altering a DVR to output video can be problematic at best. Legally, the fair use clause that existed for VHS has not been settled yet for digital video recording.
