Question:

How do I use Adobe InDesign for a Newspaper?

I'm on a Newspaper Staff for my school and we use InDesign, but I don't really know how to use it though. All the tutorials I've found mostly teach me how to use it like an alternative for photoshop, but I need to know how to use it for publishing with the proper columns.

Can someone recommend a good tutorial site for this specific situation? Thanks in advance

  1. Wow. Lots to tackle there.

There's lot's of places for qualified tutorials. Lynda.com. TotalTraining.com, even some excellent free videos at Adobe.com, the makers of InDesign.

If you're new to InDesign I'd would just start you with this simple idea: In InDesign, everything gets a container, a box usually and InDesign calls them frames. Copy goes in 'text frames', images in 'graphic frames'. The black arrow is our main tool for selecting objects and moving them around the layout. The white arrow allows us to edit frames and other details. Using these frames will help you easily set up columns.

But your best places to control columns is under the Layout menu at the top where there's an option for specifying your margins and columns, and the Pages palette, where you'll paginate your file. Between these two controls (make sure you learn about master pages from someone, they will save your publishing life!) You'll have full control over columns.
