How do I use Yahoo Messenger??(not the one with voice messages; the regular one)?

I have never used Yahoo Messenger, but all of my friends are chatting it up. Im the only one not doing it. I find it most difficult to begin chatting it up, on Yahoo's home page. need some guidance. Please help...
