  1. A hydrometer is used in the wine industry to test for specific gravity, which increases as the sugar content increases.  So, it's an indirect measurement of sugar, not a direct one.

    To use one, immerse it in the solution and give it a little spin.  When it stops, carefully read the liquid line, measuring it at the bottom of the meniscus.

    If you're trying to measure the sugar content in your urine, go buy a bottle of Diastix at the local pharmacy.  This test uses a glucose oxidase method, which is very specific to glucose and will not cross-react with other sugars/reducing substances.
