How do I use my brand new external hard drive with my DVR? HD programming is sucking up the space.?

I have a brand new 1TB SimpleTech external hard drive and a Motorola DCH6416 DVR from Charter. According to Charter, their equipment is ready for use with external hard drives but I cannot get it to work. I even went and got a replacement box to verify my first one wasn't the problem. Do I need to format the hard drive? Is my SimpleTech not fast enough?

plug it in then call dish...pay the $16 or $ 17 bucks they charge for that privilege and they will activate that function for your rec.

what exactly does it do...u should be able to connect it via the usb or firewire port and record on to it straight away. unless its a format issue . tht is FAT32 system .
