I'm not sure how to navigate through them, and I need to get to some rural villages (in the Department of Lima) from Lima.

Does anyone have advice?

I'm an American, but my Spanish is pretty good.

  1. have a nice weekend dear...!

  2. Ask the cobrador and read the sides of the buses,.

  3. As the locals and people at each corner.

They have these small vans that are known to fly, buy be careful, hold on to the roof or something, as there are not seatbelts in these vans, neither on buses.

Also, read the side of the buses-they have the name of areas they go to.

If you talk with a merchant, driver, or the assistant they will be more than happy to help you.  Just be careful, you are robed everywhere they see tourists,

I will just take a taxi whenever I am there visiting, the best thing to do will be to hire a driver for a day.  As the receptionist at your hotel, it is safer to ask from a good source  and spend more money than to  aventure by yourself or put yourself on the crime spot.
