How do I use the newest version of Paint.net?

My brother accidentally deleted paint.net. I downloaded it but its totally unfamiliar with me. When i erase, it make white and black lines that go diagonals. Sometimes my color palette disappears. Its freaking me out!! Can someone kindly give me how to use everything and get the palettes back and everything.
