How do I use this camping stove?

I'm told you use methylated spirit to light it, though parrafin is the main fuel. I don't know how to get it lit.

  1. DON'T USE PETROL. It could explode.

Fill with paraffin (kerosene), fill the trough under the burner with meths. With the stove outdoors, away from drafts and anything flammable, light the meths. Just before the meths has all burnt away pump half a dozen strokes and turn the tap. When the paraffin lights, continue to pump until you get a steady blue flame.

These stoves have a tendency to flare up when first lit so take care. Never use it indoors or inside a tent.

Unless you particularly need to use vintage equipment I would be tempted to use this stove as an ornament and buy a new one for camping. These stoves are notoriously difficult to light and cook on.

  2. Pump the handle turn on and light it.

    Petrol

FOR USE OUTDOORS ONLY *snorts* YOU MAY ALSO NEED ADULT SUPERVISION

And if you are a total dope of course you may singe the adjoining eyebrows.

  3. Meths is used to get the stove primed and heated up so that its hot enough for the paraffin to light. My opinion get a gas stove. Lot less hassle and cheaper

  4. ive got one of these!

soak a bit of rag in meths, wrap it around the base of the chimney and light it.. for aprrafin to burn well it needs to be hot and under pressure. (like old blowlamps)

BUT: given they arent the safest thing... go buy a butane stove... at least they have an off switch!

and for gods sake DONT use petrol...

  5. You see the ring thing under the main burner? Fill that with meths and set it alight. When it is nearly burnt out then pump up the pump a bit and turn on the parafin. Then it should go

The way this works is that to get a parafin stove to work the parafin needs to be under pressure and heated up. When it is burning normally the parafin heats up the preheater tubes, however it only does this when its going. Before then you need to use meths to heat up the preheater tubes.

Parafin stoves and Lanterns can be a bit tricky however they are robust, can be safer than gas (not explosive untill its under pressure), cheap to run and you can get the fuel anywhere.
