He will only take a straw sippy cup and not a regular kind for some reaon. But at night be will only take a bottle. He wakes at night for one bottle most nights still even though we've tried everything. So, how can I ween him from nighttime bottles?

  1. You can just simply throw away the bottles or be patient.

I started trying to take the bottle away from my daughter at around the same age. I only gave it to her at night and in morning, only because that is the only way she would drink her milk.

She also, and still does, at 19 months, still wakes up at night.

But a few months ago, i bought a training cup at the dollar store. The cup has a nipple but i found out that the dollar store nipples for some reason, sucks in  when she drank from it. I figured, even tho it was going to be a pain in the butt for me, that she would get tired of it always sucking in and waiting for me to pull it right out. A month later, I actually tried putting milk in her sippy  cup for her night bottle and she took it. So she hasn't been on the bottle for about a month now.

So my advice is to be patient.

  2. Have you tried just putting water in his bottle to start? I did that with one of mine who was so stubborn. He did drink it, but after about 3 or 4 days he wasn't interested in the bottle anymore.

  3. You didn't say how old he is. If he's under 12 months, I'd give him the bottle, but reduce the formula in it from 8 oz, to 6, then 4, then 2, then water.  If he is older than 12 months,

I'd put a regular sippy cup in his crib with water in it. If he is thirsty in the night, he will figure out how to get a drink of water. He may be doing this just to have you go running in there. Don't do it. You could also ask your pediatrician what methods to employ.

  4. I think he is to young to ween him off the bottle at night. but that's just my opinion I wouldn't worry to much about it it's not like he's 2. he is still getting used to the sippy cup so taking away the bottle at night might be to much for him give him time there is nothing wrong with him having a bottle espically if it's only at night, my daughter is 3 and she had the bottle at night until she was 16mnths.

  5. you will just have to stop him cold turkey...

  6. depends on how old he is - and whether it is milk or water he is drinking at night - but here are my tips/options:

    1) simply DON'T give him anything at night - it is the harshest method and normally works after about 2-4 nights.

    (i couldn't do this myself - too weak :-)

    2) dilute the feed down each night - i.e. if he normally drinks 6oz formula then use 6oz of water but only 5 scoops of formula first night, 4 scoops next night etc....until only water.

    3) decrease the amount given each night - 6oz night one, 5oz night two....etc - this should mean that he ups his intake of milk or solids during the day and will not need the night feed.

    Hope that is helpful.

    good luck
