Question:

How do I wire a combination GFCI switch where a regular switch used to be?

I bought a combination GFCI switch and electrical outlet for our bathroom to replace an ordinary switch, but it came with instructions for a GFCI plug only, and those instructions do not get the outlet and switch working.

From the wall I have a simple white, black and ground wire.

From the switch there are 2 screws for load, (which I assume I would not use, as I am not carrying on to other outlets or switches) and 2 screws for line (which I assume the black and white join to respectively) There is also a ground s***w (which the ground obviously wires to). At the top of the switch though, there are two wires (switch lines) running off the switch. Do these get attached to the load screws to run the power from the plug to the switch? Or do they get connected to the line screws with the incoming power from the breaker box? Please help!! I have changed all of the other switches in our home, I just can't figure this combination GFCI out!

  1. But based on your description , I'm assuming you mean a GFCI Receptacle only, not a combination GFCI Receptacle / Light switch (they sell these also).

    * Screws Label Load - Your correct, these are used for any down stream receptacles you would want GFCI protected.

    * Screws Labeled Line - This is for you Feeder Hot wire (Black) only.

    * The wires coming out the top - This should be for your Neutral, one is for line and the other is for load (same concept as the s***w) They should be labeled, if not you have to hook-it up and test it. One way it'll work the other way it won't.

    * You got the gnd part right

  2. www.passandseymour.

    com/pdf/U013-U020.pdf

Copy and paste this address in your browser. It will bring up wiring diagrams for all types of switches.

  3. That needs to be answered by an electrician, I would go to your local hardware store, take the new switch with you, P.S. home depot has licensed electricians on staff. hope this helps.

  4. if i am correct here the black hot line goes to the brass line s***w and the white wire goes to the silver line s***w the two black wires for the lights (black) go to the top two switch screws(provides power to the light when the switch is turned on)

  5. If there was only a switch in the box, then you cant have an outlet in it as well.  The black and white wires are simply power into and power out of the switch.  You only have a power feed and no neutral in the box.  Sorry.
