Question:

How do I work when I'm going through a bad depression?

I am finding myself having a hard time being motivated at work and that I'm often getting side-tracked. I realize I'm going through a depression. I am seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist and I planned to take a "stay-cation" for the beginning of September. I still want to do well for my boss and clients, but it just isn't in me right now.

  1. It's hard huh. i know depression hurts so much, I can't concentrate @ school and I get bad grades and I know how it feels

well you got a psychiatrist and a psychologist,

better than me i got none of those no one.

    Good Luck

  2. This won't solve the depression but it will make work more managable.  First, set (achievable) goals for the first 30 minutes of work (do: a. b &c).  Then write down 2 or 3 more for the next 30 minutes.  Do this every 30 minutes.  You will be focused on a 1or 2 things you can do and see them done  Your productivity will be noticed and you will feel better about your work performance.

I suggest before you get to work write down what you need to get done for the day.  Then arrange your 30 minute segments (of tasks) in order of your priorities for the day.  Maybe even have the first 30 minute tasks written before you get to work.  As you cross each item off your list you will have a feeling of accomplishment.

  3. I personally endured 30-plus years of chronic depression with at least two episodes of major depressive disorder (MDD). By seeing both a psychiatrist and psychologist it\'s obvious that you\'re serious about overcoming it.

I was on medication twice, but my only dealings with a psychologist was a marriage counselor. I found that self-help books and listening to positive, uplifting and motivational tapes worked better for me than the antidepressants. We are bombarded with negativity from many different sources every single day. That negativity, coupled with a chemical imbalance, caused me to feel that nothing much mattered. It took reading uplifting books, using affirmations and listening to the same tapes repeatedly to overcome the habitual negative thoughts I had going on inside my head.

I would never consider the idea of drawing disability as long as you\'re able to put one foot in front of the other. When you give yourself the label "disabled" you make it more difficult to break the pattern of depression.

I\'m now 59 years old and have been depression free for more than 7 years. Before seven years ago, I never knew it was possible to feel as good as I do now. I\'m also in better physical health and generally feel better physically than I did when I was in my 30s.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Gwynne

  4. you can get disability for that and you dont have to work but i think working is better than staying at home and dwelling just put your problems behind you and just think about work when your at work

  5. Depression is a serious disease. You should ask your psychatrist to give you a disability note to refrain from working. YOu can collect short term disability at work if you have that benefit. If you cannot recover, many people are diagnosed with permanent disabilities and you can get long term disability coverage.

Tell your Dr you cannot concentrate, you cry and cant think straight. ask for a disability. IT takes several months for the medication to work.
