How do I write a good (high school) essay?

Despite being in the highest level English classes at my school, I still did poorly on the Writing section of the SATs. How can I improve my writing skills, and also learn some English terms? (English term examples would be homophones or alliteration)

dude that was me! ask your teacher for help. usually they are willing to help. write essays alot for practice.
