Help! This is my first year in drama at my high school and we have to prepare a monologue for monday and present it on tuesday. The problem? I have no idea what to write. We were given the name of someone else in our drama class and we have to portray them.

The girl I got is named Aly. She's very quiet and shy and tends to chew gum a lot. She likes the book Twilight and the movie Pirates of the Caribbean. She doesn't get involved with politics she doesn't like to eat a lot and she dislikes fish. She likes to play volleyball and bake cookies. This is her 1st year in drama. She also sometimes forgets what she is talking about.

She is taking drama in hopes to become a better actress and a better person in general. She has seen several plays, though most of them weren't professionally done plays. She's also played the lead role in some skits.

The monologue has to be 3 minutes long and this is the only info I have on this person. Help! I don't really know how to take all this info and turn it into a monologue. I don't expect you to write it for me just give me some tips.

  1. Tell a story from her point of view.  What would she think?  How would she react?  What would an entry in her diary sound like?

Imagine she goes on a date with a handsome gentleman, who takes her out to a bookstore (we know she likes books).  Unfortunately, he surprises her by taking her to a seafood restaurant and does nothing but talk about politics all night.

Write about what she would be thinking. Would she be polite? Would she make a fuss?  Would she just walk out?  You can easily fill three minutes.

  2. Write a story taking the character into account (preferably something interesting that happened to you) in the first person and write it as though you are telling a friend the story.

  3. What an awful assignment.  I'd talk to your teacher and see if you can't be allowed to portray someone famous or a movie character or something.  That's just terrible asking kids to "portray" their own classmates. What does this teacher expect will happen?  The kids will end up making fun of each other and some of the kids will get their feelings hurt.
